2 viewfinders made out of black cardboard in the same size as the plastic picture plane. It’ll be referred to as the plastic picture plane Use a permanent marker to draw crosshairs on it (one line horizontally and one vertically, to both meet in the center). Paper to draw on, plain copy paper or a sketchbook is fine (whatever is comfortable for you) (please try and gather these before you start -you can reference how they look like on page 13 of the book) So first things first, you will need these following materials! Take a picture/scan of your progress as you go along with each exercise and tag it as #the betty edwards challenge or submit to this page :)

I’ll be mixing parts of both books together, including some exercises and dropping others but feel free to take these 'instructions’ as guidelines rather than hard and fast rules to follow! I will also be doing the course alongside the updates for tasks and so I won’t be skipping ahead- we’re on the same page :) I will recommend reading the book itself alongside the tasks to understand the theory behind it, but you can also just follow along with the exercises themselves. Opening it up to well…who ever wishes to join in!īased on the book/course ‘Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain’ by Betty Edwards (2001 edition is the one I’m using) and pulling in elements from the workbook ( both can be downloaded/accessed from here) this is a challenge to develop the sense of drawing and seeing but getting through the entirety of the book/workbook. Next week? Warm ups, Vase faces and Upside down drawing If you’re reading alongside we should be up to page 47/just before the beginning of Chapter 4 in the book itself and up to the end of exercise 3 in the workbook Look around where you’re sat and pick a corner of the room to draw (it can be as complex or simple as your want)įinished? Upload your drawings before putting them away (even if you find it embarrassing, remember that this is a placeholder of your skills before really starting this challenge!.Sitting comfortably, try out different poses/positions of your non dominant hand (so left if you’re right handed and right if you’re a lefty).Look at your reflection (head +face) and draw your self portrait.Task: (Start by taping a few pages of paper to the drawing board for a nice, slightly padded surface to draw on if you’re not using a sketchbook) Title, date and sign each drawing as you complete them Time: 1 hour to 1 ¼ hours of uninterrupted time for the 3 tasks in total
